Snam acquired technological know-how for the delivery of hydrogen-related projects through the stakes of ITM Power and Industrie De Nora. Moreover, Snam acquired a minority stake in dCarbonX and Storegga, which are companies committed in the development of H2 and CO2 storage solutions in Ireland and UK.
CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) is considered a key technology to achieve global decarbonisation targets, in particular, for some hard-to-abate sectors or where the carbon contribution is linked to the production process and is therefore not replaceable with alternative energy sources. As a major European player in the transportation and storage of molecules, we are uniquely positioned to transfer our expertise to CO2 transport and storage. For this reason, around 350 million euros of investments in our 2023-2027 strategic plan are destined for CCS.
As Snam, we are also committed to explore new business opportunities, such as Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES). LDES technologies include a variety of solutions such as electrochemical, mechanical, and thermal storage. The goal is to enhance grid stability, supporting our transition to a more sustainable energy system
Snam has created a dedicated Decarbonization Projects Unit, which currently includes 50+ professionals in the sectors of Hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The team manages the Decarbonization Research Center and the HyAccelerator initiatives.
